Nora Byrne, our vice president passed away on Wednesday 11th January 2017
(from the History of Sligo Feis Ceoil )
My parents, Edward C.and Eileen McGee of Boyle successfully entered pupils in Sligo Feis Ceoil from the late 1930’s to the 40’s. for instrumental and singing competitions. Feis week was a “ big thing” in our lives – the friendly rivalry with neighbouring towns, the travelling on the damp turf trains and Grays Inn. I remember eating my first orange in 1942 – Blackwoods had got a consignment in.
Friendships continued over the years and took up when I came to live in Sligo in later years. I met Anita Loretto when I won her fathers cup for Piano and was drawn into the senior group with Mrs Crichton playing trios at wonderful musical evenings in the company of such wonderful people as Kathleen Costello ,Breege Butler, Frank Kerrin, Mary
Parker , Mabs West, Avril & Roland Blennarhasset , Jeannie Koss and her Sligo singers, Cecilian Singers P. O Sullivan . Nuncio Caliendo was a particularly great friend who allowed me to use his grand piano.
Later when I married and changed my name to Byrne I went to live in Donegal. I entered pupils from Raphoe - Children’s Choirs, Country Choirs and I.C.A. Choirs for many years. Since my return to Sligo I have enjoyed many successful years in the vocal and instrumental section of Sligo Feis Ceoil with choirs and individual students from Sligo.
